Consumption of Salmon (Not Sure) Good for Pregnant Women
One study revealed that pregnant women who eat salmon to risk reduction antibodies contained in breast milk. The decline of these antibodies means increased risk of infant exposure to infection. The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition conducted on 123 pregnant women who rarely consume fish oil.The
respondents were asked to eat a normal menu or consume two servings of
salmon per week since the 20th week of pregnancy until delivery.Scientists
from the United Kingdom from the University of Reading and the
University of Southampton, found that pregnant women who consume salmon
ahead of the delivery process, will prove to have increased long-chain
omega3 fatty acids in breast milk than those in the first month after
birth. The researchers also found levels of secretory immunoglobulin-A is lower. Imunoglobin A is an important antibody that enhances immunity in infants against infection and help fight the newborns. These
scientists say that the main reason health experts strongly encourage
breastfeeding in the first month after birth the baby is, because breast
milk can enhance the immune system and help the newborn to avoid
infection.Of the research team noted, that some time in recent years, pregnant women are motivated to consume fish oil rich in omega3.This
is because some previous studies stated Omega3 fatty acids may increase
the nutrients essential for growth of the infant brain, eye, and
cardiac growth.However,
few pregnant women know that fish oil is consumed during the last week
of pregnancy, can affect omega-3 fatty acid content in milk, as reported
by the MedicalDaily."Pregnant
women in the United Kingdom, is currently recommended to consume one or
two servings of foods containing fish oil in one week. Goal is to
balance the need for Omega3. Meanwhile, many food sources of omega3 that
contain mercury," said the professor who led the research The faculty of Nutritional Physiology at the University of Reading, Parveen Yaqoob."From
this research, I believe that pregnant women can lead in consuming fish
oil, so they get the benefit of the nutrients that are very useful
during the initial growth of the baby," says Yaqoob.Yaqqob adds, breast milk contains an influence on immunity. "From
the research I did showed that the reduction of one type of antibody,
not necessarily affect the health of babies," she said.
