Conservation organization WWF said it had seen 18 Irrawaddy dolphins are threatened with extinction in the waters off Indonesia in Kalimantan. WWF calls for greater protection of the habitat of animals.
Not much data about the Irrawaddy dolphin and there has been no comprehensive survey conducted to determine the global population.
WWF said in the past local residents and fishermen have reported seeing the dolphins, but has never been recorded until now.
For five days, a team conducted a survey of 260 kilometers along the coast of West Kalimantan and see Irrawaddy dolphins in small groups.
This show, a dolphin habitat is still intact despite the pollution along the coast.
Irrawaddy dolphins are endangered species have been recorded in the Mekong River in Cambodia, Myanmar and Ayeyawardi River Mahakam River in East Kalimantan.
